Future Stars Programme
At Noordgesig Primary School we have many learners with incredible talent — from those who can sing beautifully, to those who excel in soccer, cricket, drama, and art. While school fees are not a concern, what we need are real opportunities that nurture these gifts while learners are still here in Grade R to 7. Fortunately, there are organisations, programmes, and community initiatives in Johannesburg and Soweto that can help expose our children to professional training, competitions, and platforms to shine.
Here are the most relevant opportunities you can connect your talented learners to right now:
🎶 Music and Performing Arts
Buskaid Soweto String Project (Diepkloof)
This project trains township youth to play classical string instruments and perform in concerts locally and abroad. It is one of the most respected music programmes in Soweto. You can reach out via their website to ask about auditions or workshops for your childrend.
👉 Website: buskaid.org.za
Field Band Foundation (Sandton, operating in townships too)
The foundation runs a vibrant music and dance programme, teaching children how to play brass and percussion instruments while also dancing in field band style. They combine music with life-skills mentoring, and children as young as seven can join. Contact them by phone (011 234 3195) or through their offices in Edenburg, Sandton.
👉 More info: fieldband.org.za
Soweto Theatre Youth Programmes
The theatre regularly hosts workshops for children in drama, dance, and music. It is a good space to expose learners to performing on stage and building confidence.
⚽ Sports Talent
KFC Mini-Cricket (Cricket South Africa)
This is South Africa’s largest grassroots cricket programme for children under 12. It provides free cricket kits, coaching, and interschool tournaments. Learners can immediately benefit from this as it is designed for primary schools. You can contact Cricket South Africa through Alungile Nyakambi (+27 84 204 3689, [email protected]) or link with the Titans Cricket Development office via Ofentse Ranoto ([email protected]) to get involved.
SAFA Grassroots Soccer Development
The South African Football Association runs training and development leagues for under-13s. By registering Noordgesig Primary with the SAFA Johannesburg region, your soccer players can access coaching, development tournaments, and scouting pathways.
Netball South Africa Development Leagues
For young girls especially, Netball SA supports school leagues and development clinics in townships. Partnering with them ensures your learners can compete in structured competitions.
🎨 Arts and Creativity
Cotlands – Play and Creativity NGO
Cotlands partners with schools to run creative play and arts programmes. They provide resources like art kits, early learning toys, and workshops. This could be brought into Noordgesig as an after-school art club.
Lefika La Phodiso (Johannesburg Art Therapy Centre)
Lefika specialises in using art to heal and build resilience. They run community art programmes for children, and you can request them to hold creative workshops with your learners.
National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC)
The NAC funds school or community-based arts projects. Noordgesig could apply for a small grant to start a drama or art club, buying materials and even hosting a school showcase.
🌍 General Talent Exposure
Soweto TV & Jozi FM
Both regularly host youth talent competitions in singing, dance, and poetry. Entering your learners in these events gives them exposure and the chance to be recognised by the community.
Star for Life Programme
This NGO partners with schools to bring life-skills, music, and arts programmes that encourage learners to pursue their talents. They often set up school workshops and mentorship events.
